The Coldest, Bloodiest Vengeful Acts In Gaming
- Tekken 5
- Sleeping Dogs
- Saints Row 2
- Saints Row
- Fable II
How do you exact revenge on those who have wronged you? Hopefully you're one of the many well-balanced members of society who feel a strong, assertive, private word in the individual's ear will suffice. For some characters bitchy Twitter posts and smashed-up apartments are just a little… Well… Tame.
These scorned folk in this feature employ far more inventive ways of getting their own back. Feast on Made2Game’s best revenges. Bon appetit!
SPOILER ALERT: If you're yet to sample the delights of Sleeping Dogs, Saints Row and Saints Row 2, Tekken 5 and Fable II, and intend to do so in the near future, it might be wise to avoid this piece until you have. The below feature outlines sections of each games' narratives in quite some detail. You have been warned.
Chu on this: Mrs. Chu force-feeds human flesh to Dogeyes in Sleeping Dogs
1. Mrs. Chu’s final kill - Sleeping Dogs (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC)
Never anger a woman with a collectionof meat cleavers for hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. When that woman is fearsome cook and restaurant owner Mrs Chu, you know it’s time to hot tail it out the eatery.
Revenge is usually a dish best served cold, but the Sleeping Dogs' matriarch prefers a bowel of steaming hot soup with extra fleshy croutons.
After Mrs. Chu’s son Winston is gunned down on his wedding day by hitman Johnny Ratface, the formidable chef cooks up a recipe for retribution.
The knifey head of the Chu family sends protagonist Wei Shen to find the trigger man and bring him in for questioning. Ratface reveals that Winston’s childhood friend, turned gang rival, Dogeyes ordered the wedding day massacre. After butchering Ratface, Mamma Chu instructs Wei to invite Dogeyes for dinner. When Winston's old BFF arrives he finds a nice hearty broth waiting for him.
“I’ve left the bones in there, just the way you like it,” Mrs. Chu teases. “I want you to eat it all.” And just in case Dogeyes was wondering what became of Ratface, the chef tells him: “Johnny’s in the soup. Maybe I should put you in the stew.”
The slicing and dicing Mrs. Chu then makes dog meat out of Dogeyes. Her appetite for revenge has been satisfied.
Speaking of appetites, we may have just lost ours.
The weight of truth: Mearo realises he has accidentally killed his girlfriend in Saints Row 2
2. Jessica is crushed - Saints Row 2 (Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC)
The Third Row Saints and rival gang The Brotherhood are fighting for control of Stillwater Penitentiary. Originally, Brotherhood leader Mearo suggests an allegiance between the gangs but offers the Saints a meagre 20% of all profits. Saints leader, The Protagonist, is left insulted and there begins a bitter war.
The Protagonist is driven to revenge after fellow gang member Carlos dies of his wounds having been dragged behind a truck by a Brotherhood thug. The Saints discover it was Mearo’s girlfriend Jessica who ordered Carlos' gruesome death. The gang also learn a handful of other very significant facts: Maero is a monster truck fanatic; he loves nothing more than wrecking other vehicles; he never checks the trunks of the cars he’s crushing and the gangbanger's just signed up to take part in a demolition derby. Convenient.
After kidnapping Jessica, The Protagonist locks her in the trunk of her own car before driving it to the car mangling event. Mearo doesn’t hear Jessica’s screams as he accelerates up a ramp in his over-sized truck. The vehicle comes crashing down on top of Jessica’s car, crushing her to death. As the smoke from the wreckage begins to clear The Protagonist walks calmly towards Mearo and applauds him before tossing him the keys to Jessica’s car.
“Do me a favour,” the Protagonist purrs. “When you check the trunk just remember you should have offered me something better than 20%.”
An explosive ending: Nina Williams attempts to blow up her sister Anna in Tekken 5
3. Nina Williams’ explosive revenge - Tekken 5 (Playstation 2)
Sibling rivalry isn’t exactly uncommon between females; most sisters will argue at some point. Hopefully, not all girls would try to blow their sister up after a fight.
But then Nina Williams is not like most girls.
Nina and Anna Williams have fought since the death of their father, Richard. It should probably be noted that daddy was an assassin who may have had a few enemies. However, the shortsighted Williams sisters seem intent on blaming each other for his fate. The fiery femme fatales have been caught in a catfight since the very first Tekken game. By the end of Tekken 5, they are still trying to destroy each other, using many of the assassination skills their father taught them. Daddy would be so proud.
By the end of the fifth Tekken, Nina decides it’s about time she took revenge on Anna for giving her years of grief. The older sister spots her chance when she and Anna are hired to play enemies in a movie. The girls are filmed sword fighting on a castle rooftop. Anna emerges the victor and the film crew rush to congratulate her, but Nina is determined to have the last laugh. Whilst Anna is basking in the applause, Nina calmly walks away, presses a detonator and… Boom! No more little sister.
Incredibly, by some miracle, Anna survives the explosion. She’s back in Tekken 6 (in all her provocative bum-wiggling glory). We're sure she’ll think twice before she messes with big sis again. And she probably won’t be borrowing any of her sister’s clothes without asking.
Hang on: Tanya Winters clings to a window ledge before plummeting in Saints Row 2
4. Tanya’s fall from grace - Saints Row (Xbox 360)
Benjamin King is the head of the Vice Kings, one of Stillwater’s most influential gangs. Tanya Winters is a former prostitute who has become a Vice Kings gangbanger, in every sense of the word, by sleeping with King’s bodyguard Anthony and second-in-command Warren. Following Anthony’s death, Tanya persuades Warren and other disloyal gangsters to try and overthrow King by killing him. Satisfied the Godfather has been dealt with, Tanya screws Warren (metaphorically this time) by shooting her gullible lover dead. Tanya saunters off to King’s penthouse, believing she’s in charge now. But, oops, it turns out King has powerful friends who were willing to defend him. The boss is far from dead Tanya and he’s coming for you.
King bursts into the penthouse to find the calculating man-eater sitting at his work desk. “It’s over, girl,” King tells Tanya. “You’re not going to be able to f**k your way out of this one.” Tanya pulls a gun on King, but clearly she hasn’t clocked as many hours at the range as her death defying beau. King has his own gun ready and quickly shoots Tanya through a window. Clinging to a ledge, the entrepreneurial escort begs for her life.
“Oh, Tanya,” King scoffs. “Do yourself a favour and die with some dignity.”
King stamps on her talented fingers, sending Tanya hurtling towards the ground and straight through the screen of a parked car. It’s quite a fall from grace.
So if, like Tanya, you’re planning to assassinate the head of a powerful gang, you’d better make sure you get your man.
Dead mean: A ghost plots his cruel revenge on an ex lover in Fable II
5. 'Til death do us part - Fable II (Xbox 360)
And finally, proof that you don’t always need to resort to violence to satisfy your vengeful tendencies.
A heartbroken ghost named Victor enlists The Hero of Bowerstone, the protagonist in Fable II, to help exact revenge on his ex-fiancée, Alex. Yep, some people hold a grudge even after death. Victor reveals the tragic reason why he’s dead; he took his own life after being jilted by Alex on their wedding day. The apparition wants the hero to woo Alex and propose to her before handing her a rejection note. The bitter ghost explains: “I want her to feel what I felt; the pain, the humiliation. I want her heart to shatter in so many pieces she can’t go on living.”
The protagonist wins Alex’s heart with worrying ease and she joyfully accepts his proposal. “I’m the luckiest woman in the world,” Alex coos. “I never thought I’d find happiness again'”
Alex reveals her terrible guilt over what happened to Victor. Playing The Hero of Bowerstone you hear her sob story before handing over the letter. It reads: “It’s time for you to know the truth. I don’t love you. I’ve never loved you. This was all a game for me. You are empty and deceitful and I hope you never find the slightest glimmer of happiness in this life.” Ouch!
Alex is so distraught she kills herself and comes face to face (or soul to soul) with Victor. After learning it was all a ruse designed she exclaims, “I never want to see you two again!”
So, it turns out that, sometimes, love hurts even when you’re dead.
