New Borderlands 2 trailer welcomes you to the jungle...

Words by Mick Fraser

2009’s Borderlands was a game mostly about guns. It was set on a Mad Max-inspired desert planet where killer wildlife vied with insane mutants for the honour of ripping apart any prospector foolish enough to go looking for the legendary Vault, an ancient stockpile of unimaginable wealth.

But regardless of the setting, it was mostly about guns. Lots and lots of guns. Approximately 87 bazillion guns, in fact. Combining first person shooter action with RPG-style looting, Borderlands provided a huge, addictive experience quite unlike anything else at the time.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t all that big on variety – aside the ridiculous number of guns, obviously. The entire game was spent in dusty desert environments and clapboard shanty towns, shooting a handful of enemies that were mostly differentiated by colour. It wasn’t boring, but it didn’t take all that long for fatigue to set in.

Well, the sequel is fast approaching, and Gearbox Software have released a brand new trailer showing off the sheer variety on offer in Borderlands 2. Pandora has had a makeover, and now features rocky jungles and icy, windblown tundras alongside the dry, arid deserts – and everywhere is crammed full of things with teeth that want to eat you.

It’s safe to say that there will be a great deal more variety in the sequel – and we can’t wait to get back to Pandora and start stockpiling guns and annihilating all these cute little critters.

Borderlands 2 is developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games. It is currently scheduled for release on September 21st. For more info, visit the official website.
