New Game Of The Day - 1000 Tiny Claws (No 21)

A while back when Made2Game was wearing its old outfit, we started a regular feature called New Game Of The Day (the idea for which was in no way pinched from The Guardian's New Band Of The Day). While negotiating the torrid waters that was the site redesign and relaunch, New Game Of The Day floundered in the shallows. Okay, what we mean is we haven't done one for ages. But NGOTD, (as no one but us abbreviates this feature to) is back and will be a proper regular regular.

The premise is simple. Rather than a straight 'new game announced' story, NGOTD not only gives you an overview of what the game is about, its release date and so on, but also some bits and bobs pointing you to places where you can find out more about the title, what folks are saying about it and what else you might like to play in the meantime if the game sounds like Your Kind Of Thing. We're not fussy about what kind of game it is or whether it's an humble iPhone title or the latest AAA blockbuster-in-waiting, we just pick games that sound interesting.

So here we are with our first New Game Of The Day for a while, the superbly-titled 1000 Tiny Claws.

What? New hacky-slashy PlayStation Minis title from the Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess folks.

When? 5 October

Where? PS3/PSP

You’ve got to hand it to Mediatonic, they know how to give a game a cracking name. 1000 Tiny Claws conjours up images of your character fighting off hordes of tiny crabs like the ones in this video of the Christmas Island crab invasion. Which is probably the point, to be fair, as the game promises to pit you against crab-like hordes. On some islands. The ‘dangerously cursed islands’, in fact.

Described as a ‘sword-swinging arcade battler’, 1000 Tiny Claws puts you in the shoes of a bunch of sky pirates who must stave off a world-ruining disaster of their own making by cranking out combos and special moves against the enemy. The crabby enemy.

Being set on floating islands ‘n’ all, the aim appears to be battering the enemies into submission before swiping them off the side of said sky islands while avoiding the self-same plummet yourself.

It all sounds like suitably cheap and cheerful fun, and we’ve enjoyed Mediatonic’s previous PlayStation Minis (see below), so this should be one to ink in for PSN download. The 1000 Tiny Claws release date is 5 October if you want to plonk that in your diary.

And now, in numbers so we don’t have to write it all out again, here's the official blurb telling us that PlayStation Minis title will have:

- Story mode featuring 25 levels over 5 exotic stages

- 12 Unique enemies

- 3 Epic Boss battles

- 5 Survival Mode Stages

- 25 Challenge Mode Stages

- 16 Revealing Ship's Log entries to discover

- 15 Awesome Awards to place in your Treasure Room

- 6 Animated Piratical cut-scenes

Developer legacy: Although much of their work has involved creating iPhone titles for existing IPs (including a couple of Sonic titles), Mediatonic are probably best known for their PlayStation Minis efforts Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess (review here)  and Who’s That Flying?

They say: “After masterminding the award-winning Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess and Who’s That Flying, you’d be hoping for good things once again from the team” dailyjoypad.co.uk

We say: “We used to have a facebook group that was all about crabs in videogames. True fact. If only 1000 Tiny Claws was around then...”

Can’t wait? Play this: Well you probably should check out Mediatonic's previous Minis if you haven't already. For some more crab-related action, you could try Konami's WiiWare effort Sandy Beach (here's a link to a Sandy Beach review, which includes my favourite worst intro sentence of all time, ever).
