Uncharted 3 meets avant-garde gaming at GameCity 6

Uncharted 3 developers Naughty Dog might seem like strange bedfellows with avant-garde Belgium dev house Tale of Tales – the makers of mindbending experimental games like The Path and The Graveyard.

But Made2Game’s favourite games festival, GameCity, is bringing Naughty Dog’s Richard Lemarchand and Tale of Tales’ Michaël Samyn and Auriea Harvey together to show how much they have in common.

The inspiration for big budget games like Uncharted 3 and its predecessors might seem to come straight from blockbuster movies and popcorn games but Lemarchand will discuss how Uncharted 2 was influenced by The Graveyard and Tale of Tales ideas about removing rules and rewards from gameplay.

“Many of us at Naughty Dog are very interested in independent and experimental games - the work being done in those worlds is impacting the development of mainstream games in profound ways that we're only just beginning to understand,” Lemarchand said.

Tale of Tale’s will talk about their approach to making games and their ‘notgames’ initiative where they remove the standard gameplay idea of rules and rewards and replace. They will also reveal some of their work in progress.

Tale of Tales’ Michaël Samyn said, “It's very encouraging to see mainstream game designers take the exploratory work of independent studios seriously, especially with regards to realizing the potential of this wonderful medium.”

If you head along to the event at in the Council house Ballroom, Old Market Square at 2pm on Thursday, 27 October you’ll also get a chance to ask questions at a post-event Q&A (although we’re pretty sure Lemarchand won’t be spilling any Uncharted 3 tips!).

Tale of Tales VS Naughty Dog is just one part of GameCity6, the annual celebration of videogame culture, which runs from October 25-29th. GameCity6 events are mostly free.
