NPD study shows console use in US

A new study based on how console users spend their time on consoles has been published, and it's pretty interesting stuff.
Among the revelations, we find out that Xbox 360 users mostly use their machine to play online, PS3 owners enjoy watching movies and Wii owners enjoy offline gaming. Who would have thought it eh?
The Nielsen poll, which comes via
Gamastura, reveals Xbox 360 is the king when it comes to online gaming, with 28 percent using their console in this way, compared to 19 percent on PlayStation 3 and 12 percent on the Wii.
"Compared to the other two consoles, the bulk of time on the Wii is in the form of offline gaming," explained Nielsen's research.
"The system trails in use for online play. This may reflect the lesser emphasis on online applications and gameplay for the Wii in general.
"In terms of streaming, Netflix was introduced this year for the Wii, but its lead in share is likely a function of the fewer hours per user that is being divided up... overall, the Wii is most defined by its use for traditional offline gaming."
Unsurprisingly the PlayStation 3 was top dog for watching DVDs or Blu-Ray with 27 percent of people spending time in this way, compared to the 11 percent on Xbox 360.
"In sum, the PlayStation 3 stands out for its use as a DVD/Blu-Ray player as well as a gaming console," Nielsen judged.
