Codemasters unveil new browser-based F1 game

With F1 moving over to Sky next year much to the dismay of fans, F1 is about to become less accessible if you want to follow the sport without having to pay subscription fees. But fear not however, as the ever-reliable Codemasters might have a solution.

F1 2011 has just over a month until it speeds off the line, but Codemasters has already announced plans to release a new F1 game next month. Except it's not F1 2012. No, it's not even a console game for that matter.

The announcement is for F1 Online: The Game, a new free-to-play browser game due for release early next year. Little has been revealed so far, but as you can see from the screenshot above it will be a top-down racer. A management system is also set to be included, allowing players to create their own team, designing the livery and managing the commercial side while overlooking research and development.

"As the worldwide gaming market evolves, 2012 is the perfect time to extend this series to the free-to-play market,” Codemasters' online VP David Solari commented. "With a bespoke design for accessible browser play, F1 Online: The Game is a perfect complimentary experience to the HD series and will appeal to a broad spectrum of Formula One’s millions of fans worldwide."

It's certainly unconventional for Codemasters, but sounds quite in-depth for a browser game. You can sign up on the new official site to register your interest - DGP will be viewing the game next week, so stay tuned for more details.

F1 2011 is scheduled for release September 23rd.
