WTF of the Week: Tokyo Jungle

WTF of the Week: Tokyo Jungle

We're not entirely sure what to make of this new downloadable title from Sony's Japan Studio. A product of their C.A.M.P initiative (a set-up similar to Microsoft's XNA) that allows members of the Japanese public to create unique, innovative games and submit them for publication. Before we say too much, we have to be honest and admit that we weren't entirely sure we hadn't nodded off and woken up on April Fool's Day 2013 when we first saw this trailer.

It's a bizarre premise to say the least: everyone in Tokyo has dsappeared and the animals have taken over. All the animals, regardless of their country of origin or ecological needs. And, for reasons that may never be explained, they've then started some kind of odd multi-species war. The trailer shows everything from prowling lions to gangs of lemmings and humping dogs, and the content warning proclaims Blood, Violence, Suggestive Themes and Crude Humour. Um, ok... At the very least, it shows a strange sense of humour at work.

It looks dog-ugly, which may or may not be entirely due to its indie nature and no matter which way we look at it, we just can't imagine it being any good whatsoever and yet, despite ourselves, we are intrigued like you read about. It could be atrocious, or it could be the best damn thing ever. Either way, it's about time we saw dogs dressed as tribal leaders, bears fighting tigers and gangs of lemmings roaming the streets of a derelict Tokyo. Frankly, it's what the industry has been lacking up to now.
